Bungie is not pulling the plug on Destiny 2, which at least relieves some of the pressure on its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon.
As part of a livestream this week, the Sony subsidiary revealed the full-extent of its plans for the first-person shooter, including two expansion packs – one of which is inspired by Star Wars.
The content schedule is as such:
- The Edge of Fate: 15th July
- Renegades: 2nd December
A big Core Game Update will also launch on 15th July, making changes to the onboarding experience for new players.
Without getting too deep into the weeds, a new streamlined activity selection screen will help you to more quickly get to the content you want to play, which should help onboard players downloading the game for the first time.
One other thing worth pointing out is that new Solo Ops will allow you to enjoy the title on your own, so you won’t necessarily need to engage with co-op if you just want to chill out in single player. That seems like a smart addition, as not everyone always wants to join a Fireteam.
As for the new expansions, The Edge of Fate will dive into the origins of Destiny’s universe, and will come with new gameplay, abilities, and story. Meanwhile, Renegades will offer a unique experience inspired by the Star Wars universe, with more information to be announced in September.
Look, we won’t pretend to be experts on Destiny 2, but making the content a little more accessible and adding in some meaningful expansions makes sense to us. We suspect, even with all of the changes, this is still going to be a hard game to get into in 2025, but we appreciate the attempt from Bungie, and it’ll be interesting to see just how successful its efforts actually are.
The two new expansions are available to pre-order on the PS Store now, with a massive Year of Prophecy bundle available if you’re already committed to both The Edge of Fate and Renegades. There’s also a Collector’s Edition you can pre-order from the Bungie Store, which includes a pretty cool statue among other physical trinkets.

Sweet! Can't wait for Byf to tell me all about the new Nine lore... Do you know what was a really good onboarding experience? The Red War.
One of my gripes with Destiny is that every new expansion introduces new character class abilities, but they tend to suck and be less impact full than the starting powers, in some cases. I used to like throwing an energy shield around a la 'Cap America', but then it got turned into... a shadowy bow that did no damage? 🤔
@Mintie I have no idea what any of this means but it sounds very sarcastic.
Oh wow, I wonder if it's gonna cost $20 per skin with a $40 expansion with less content than the original expansions.
I'm all for the start of a new saga on Destiny, but I'm not sure about the whole Star Wars expansion. Intrigued to see what the plan is lore wise to fit it in.
Then most striking part of this reveal is that Destiny 2 is the highest grossing game on Steam today just because of these pre-orders going live. That’s kinda insane for a dead game.
This game needs to be killed off and a sequel made at this point
Star Wars in Destiny sounds like a jump the shark moment. Is Bungie cooked?
I was extremely underwhelmed by that showcase. Bungie are masters of over hyping, but yet, nothing they announced was exciting.
No new subclasses or abilities.
It seems they're trying to separate the paid and free content a bit more, which is a good idea, but the Star Wars thing just feels like we're turning into fortnite.
So Destiny 2 is just Fortnite now? Thanks.
Star Wars in Destiny… gross!
I played an insane amount of D1. Not long after TFK released, I joined up with a clan and I played it every single day for more than a year. No joke. It was at that point, not long after Rise of Iron came out, that I felt I needed a break.
At that point, I figured there was no way I was going to play D2. And yet, a new online buddy of mine has been slowly warming me up to the idea of it, plus just a general reminiscence for the Destiny days. I might finally check it out, maybe, and this crossover definitely helps entice me more.
If they would stop taking content away and keep it the same as it was with Destiny they might get and keep more players. I quit playing after they started locking content I had already bought behind a paywall. I played the first Destiny everyday but taking content away in Destiny 2 ruined the experience for me. They actually locked the Farm behind a pay wall and it was apart of the first game.
