Ghost of Yotei PS5 Pre-Orders Show Players Are Willing to Pay $80, Even When They Don't Have To

Does make me laugh about game prices increasing and the out cry.

Then the more expensive digital deluxe edition is number one in the pre orders.

The same if you look at Doom in number 4 and 5 the far more expensive deluxe edition ahead of the cheaper standard edition.

Now we know some of the reason game prices are on the increase, the companies see this and think gamers like to spend more and have the money to do so.

I'm not pre-ordering. For a start it's pointless to pre-order a digital copy, stock isn't going to run out. Secondly, I liked the story in the first one, but the side content was incredibly dull open world busy work. I'll wait for reviews and probably a sale.

There's no transparency on what gets put to the top of this chart though, right? Sony could just bump GoY to the top to advertise the game, I wouldn't just take their word that this is purely based on the number of pre-orders and more so based also on what they would like folks to pre-order

@OldGamer999 maybe budget-minded gamers are a minority. Maybe those who voice their opinions are also a minority. 🙂

I'm looking forward to yotei as much as most of us, but pre ordering digital is the dullest tool thing to do.

@DonkeyFantasy Stock isn't going to run out for a physical copy either, especially for a major first party game. At least with a digital preorder you get to preload the game before launch and start playing as soon as it hits midnight.

@Matroska They ran out of copies of Clair Obscur so people who wanted a boxed copy have to wait.
The pre load thing is useful on a digital pre-order but you can't pre-load 5 months in advance. I believe you are charged straight away for digital. With interest rates as they are now you should earn a little bit of interest on that charge over 5 months if you waited.

I do find it funny that the Internet is seemingly completely against $80 games and then when given a choice, most choose the $80 variant.

As for preordering, I don't see the point in giving my money months in advance for something that I can just buy on the day

It's not just Ghost either, the more expensive versions of F125, Doom and Death Stranding are also the better selling variants

@PsBoxSwitchOwner Think about it this way, there will be people who pre-order a day just before launch. This is to say there are always purchasers each and every day. There will be people who preorder GTA, and not play Yotei. There would also be people who preorder GTA and not Yotei. There could also be people who won't play GTA but just Yotei. There's also those who owned just Pro and Base digital. No point trying to understand it my friend. 🤝

Should wait for reviews, then pre ordering digital the day before release to pre install. - I could totally understand that.

Id be willing to bet the overlap between the people that preorder a digital game, and those that will get the more expensive version is not insignificant. They are still a minority.

Most people will buy at/ after launch for the standard price or wait for a sale.

@Enigk It's available all over the place. It's on Amazon now, and The Game Collection, and Argos. So the first three places I checked all have it. In America it's in stock at GameStop.

But that does remind me of another issue with physical preorders - they can cancel them if they later find out they don't have enough stock. Or you get locked in with the retailer you preordered from even if they can't fulfill the orders and other places still have it (like what's presumably happening in America with COE33).

I checked the interest rate thing and I'd make about 75p in 5 months on the price of the game. Not enough for a packet of crisps or a can of Coke, sadly (I remember when a can was 25p...)

Still not too sure about Tsushima. Will try a 2nd run to see if I'd appreciate it better. PushSquare GOTY confirmed, regardless whatever else releases...historically.

@carlos82 I always buy psn top up cards from shopto in the uk, there’s always a sale on at some point and can usually get a 18% discount. So it’s like buying it on sale at launch day

@DonkeyFantasy Normally I would agree about pre-ordering, but with prices on the rise, it's entirely possible this game will bump up to $79.99 at some point. Just 5 years ago it would have been unthinkable for consoles to go UP after years on the market, but here we are. Add in the Orange Menace and his unpredictable, and very infuriating, trade war and there is a very solid argument to be made about preordering immediately to lock-in the lower price.

@Matroska I didn't check stock. I was just basing it on an article I read on this site last week. 75p interest is better in our pockets than Sony's though.

For anyone in the US who freaks out at the recent “omg $80+ for a game” convo… down under we’ve been enduring that for some time now.

Assuming the quoted $70 and $80 prices are USD, the Aussie exchange rate on that right now is roughly $108 and $124 respectively… however these editions are listed as $125 and $140 on the AU PS Store (that’s 16% and 12% increases there, or basically the magic USD80 and 90 numbers).

GoY is only one recent example of this; I could easily trawl the PS Store for stacks of (especially AAA title) examples where this pricing discrepancy is in place. Meanwhile, AUD125+ is not (and hasn’t for some time been) uncommon for a “deluxe edition” here, and often for the “standard edition” too.

Why these considerable markups for literally the same digital product just downloaded to a different locale?? 👀😕

Always a strange comment, when people say there is no point pre-ordering a digital game. Then buy it day 1 anyway. Why not just pre-order and get the free extras of ur getting day 1 anyway? What do u prove losing out on the pre-order bonuses?

I pre-ordered the deluxe edition because this is the only game I really want this year. The rest I'll pick up on sale or discounted physical editions.

@Nexozi because most people don't care about avatars and an in game cosmetic. The sensible thing to do is wait until it's confirmed the game is good and doesn't run like trash.

@Matroska I'm a grown man with a job. I'm not staying up until midnight on a work night to play a game. Also my Internet is plenty fast enough to download a game in less than hour and I can start it downloading any time through the app, so there's no waiting anyway.

If u want the game and ur going to buy it on day 1 anyway, why not just pre-order it. There's no real reason to wait between buying now and buying on day 1.

Just think getting on like ur better than people that have pre-ordered it is a strange stance to take. Considering both will be playing on day 1.

@SeanOhOgain Yeah, I would view these in the same way as the game "charts" in retail stores. They'll be very loosely based on sales data, but mainly it's about putting the games you want to receive the most attention at the top, or any promotional activity funded by the publisher.

Yeah I don't understand preordering digital games months in advance. You can just do a day or a few days before if you want it readily downloaded upon release. Reviews will probably out by then.

I only pre-order physical games (mostly limited editions) as they can get cheaper and/or they could run out on release day.

@Nexozi Ha I never implied I was a better person for not pre-ordering. And as I said I will be waiting for a sale on this game anyway, not playing day one, because I thought the first one was good but not great.

You make a good point about Sony games being pretty polished at launch, but I used to think the same about Nintendo and then they released that Pokemon game which ran like puke. EA and CD Projekt Red have taught me never to pre-order a game.

Would have loved to pick up the collector’s edition off PS Direct, but someone decided to remove the physical disc version of the game in favor of a digital code.

Collector’s and enthusiasts are the ones interested in the boxed special editions, and we want a hard copy. The Everyman raised on madden and Fortnite might indeed try Ghost of Yotei, but he isn’t shelling out for an expensive special edition off ps direct. My question is, with the removal of the actual disc coveted by the hardcore collector, Who is this actually for?

I wish E3 were still a thing; I’d like to hear stories of ardent fans taking their Ethernet cables and a sharpie to have the Sucker Punch dev team sign their copy of Ghost of Yotei.

I will be pre-ordering closer to launch, I have a few other games to get before (mainly Switch 2 ones).

I would generally wait for a sale as well for most games. Either digital or physical. However I really enjoyed the story in GoT and always said I would get the next one day 1. Though couldn't justify buying the collectors edition.

Def reasons to be nervous about the quality in which games are released nowadays. Has been a case for some time to just ship it out and patch it later. Worrying once it starts becoming a thing with the big names doing this.

@PlatinumMikey I can't wait for it! The only game I've been really looking forward to since it was confirmed. Though bit worried incase the story isn't as good as Tsushima.

I don't see the point of preordering so far in advance... aside from the possibility of delays, you get your money trapped.
As for the 80$... the offered extra content doesn't really merit the extra 10$, but if one wants to supports the devs, that's one way to do it.

GoY is a must-buy for me. But I'm not 12 years old. I can wait.

Ten years ago I would pick up maybe 2 or 3 games a month. Now that's dropped to a whooping 0. I only pick up games that I know will be good and that I will put a lot of time into, no longer will I pick something up that I'm somewhat interested in because the price is just too high to make that gamble. I suppose I'm in the minority, however.

@ATaco No,you’re not. Me as well. Comparing my buying power 6/7 years ago to nowadays,im mostly buy game on sale. For big game like this(im freaking love GoT)im definitely will buy it but not so sure on day 1 or later.

And of course,physical disc is a must for this big game as i can sold it after finish playing.

I guess that puts my position on this into perspective.

Most don't care and there is little to no point in getting on my high horse about it.

I just expect these things to get more and more and more expensive until the very limits of what people can afford are at breaking point.

I'd have hoped people would stand against it by now, but clearly not.

Oh people sure love these two things:

A) being outraged about whatever people want to get outraged about.

B) thoughtlessly consume by the motto "you can't tell me what I should do with my money!"
